Province starting hiring process for new online school

The province is looking to hire 90 teachers for its new online school.

The Saskatchewan Distance Learning Corporation (Sask DLC) will be the main hub for online education in the province.

A total of 150 educators will be employed with 60 being transferred from the Sun West School Division.

There will be staffing opportunities at the nine Sask DLC regional campuses. They’re located in Estevan, La Ronge, Moose Jaw, Neilburg, Nipawin, Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Swift Current, and Yorkton.

Each campus will have a principal, teachers, and support staff.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has also been signed with the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) ensuring all teachers will be STF members meaning they’ll be eligible for a pension, supports, and benefits.

“The number of staff available to students through Sask DLC will ensure that students have access to high-quality education,” said Dustin Duncan, Saskatchewan’s Education Minister. “The opportunity to have staff connected to students across the province will ensure students are supported at the local level.”

Distance learning will be free to any interested students. The government expects most of the students will come from public school divisions, but separate school divisions, the Conseil des Écoles fransaskoises, and qualified independent schools can offer online learning after applying to the Ministry of Education.

Each student will still be able to take advantage of educational assistants, speech-language pathologists, and counsellors at their local school division. They’ll also be allowed to take part in graduation, the driver’s license training program, and extracurricular activities.

Student registration for the 2023/24 school year is expected to open in April.
