Carlton boys fall in bronze medal game, Girls win consolation finals

Mar 25, 2023 | 4:16 PM

Although the Carlton boys team didn’t finish on the podium, they still have a lot to be proud of.

The Crusaders squared off with the Regina Riffel Royals on Saturday, where they ran out of steam towards the end and fell 86-73.

Carlton led Riffel at the half 43-42 and the competitiveness of either team kept growing into the third where the Royals led by five going into the final quarter. The Cru were down by ten early in the fourth before climbing their way back to within four. But, some clutch late-game threes from Regina put the nail in Carlton’s coffin, as the Riffel Royals walked away with provincial bronze.

Carlton senior Luke Huddlestone put up a team-high 28 points in his last game donning the red and gold, while Pranav Saggar and Brayden Hazzard each put up 15 in the loss.

Osagie Okundaye led the way for Regina, registering 30 points while his teammate Davin Berry dropped 22 points.

The girls were more successful on Saturday, winning their consolation game 72-48 against Saskatoon Holy Cross.

Led by Maya Soles, the senior netted 17 points in her last high school contest while Sophie Larsen had herself 14 points and Madelyn Tomyn had 13.

Jasmine Das had 14 points for Holy Cross to lead the way as teammate Anika Nechvatal had 11.

The 5A boys gold medal game between Saskatoon Holy Cross and Saskatoon Walter Murray happens at Carlton CPAC with tipoff at 7 p.m. The 5A girls gold medal match between Harvest City and Regina Riffel gets started at 5 p.m., also at Carlton CPAC.
