Proclamations among the plans to mark Broncos tragic anniversary

Mar 24, 2023 | 4:00 PM

The City of Humboldt is planning two proclamations to mark the fifth anniversary of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy on April 6.

That’s not all that’s being planned, according to the city’s communications director Penny Lee, but details on what else is planned will not be released until next week.

The crash killed 16 people and injured another 13 on April 6, 2018.

The two proclamations will go before Humboldt city council at its meeting on March 27.

First, the city will declare Thursday, April 6 as “2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Day.”

The proclamation will encourage all citizens to “remember and honour those who were affected by the tragedy of April 6, 2018, and to observe a moment of silence at 4:50 pm, the approximate time the tragedy occurred 5 years ago.”

The proclamation states that the crash resulted in the “heartbreaking loss of 16 people and will have an everlasting traumatic effect on the 13 who survived, their families and our community.”

It goes on to say “each of those 29 involved in the tragedy has inspired legacies that will be cherished and will always have a place in our hearts.”

The second proclamation will be set for April 7th, when the plan is to proclaim “Green Shirt Day” in Humboldt in honour of Bronco player Logan Boulet.

April 7 was the day Boulet succumbed to his injuries. The proclamation says “his parents Bernadine and Toby Boulet chose to fulfil Logan’s wishes and donate his organs so that six lives could be saved.”

It adds “this selfless act inspired over 100,000 Canadians to become organ donors in the days and weeks that followed which resulted in the largest number of Canadians to register as organ donors in Canadian history due to one event – one person which has now become known as the “Logan Boulet Effect.”

The proclamation explains that the hope is that the day will raise awareness of the importance of organ donation.
