While the provincial election is over a year away, Rural Municipality (RM) of Prince Albert Reeve Eric Schmalz is not wasting time letting voters know he would like his name on the ballot.

Schmalz plans to seek the nomination for the Sask. Party in the Sask. Rivers constituency, whose current member of the legislative assembly (MLA) is Nadine Wilson, with the Sask. United party.

“We have been selling Saskatchewan Party memberships in the constituency since December, building an incredible team of supporters and volunteers.” Schmalz said, “The response has been tremendous, and we will continue to build on that wave of support, right up to nomination night.”

Schmalz was first elected Reeve in 2019 during a byelection, and then was re-elected last in 2020.

Born and raised in Prince Albert, Schmalz is a Saskatchewan farmer, rancher, business owner. In 2017, he retired from the RCMP— a career that spanned 13 years.

His family owns businesses in the RM of Buckland, and farm in the region near Meath Park, Weirdale, Prince Albert, and Shellbrook.

“After retiring from the RCMP, I still had the desire to serve my community. I have been able to accomplish some very positive things, both administratively and economically in my role as Reeve.” Schmalz said. “I want to bring my proven track record of strong leadership, economic development, and public safety to the provincial level on behalf of Saskatchewan Rivers. I will be a strong voice and advocate for the people of Saskatchewan Rivers, and I will work diligently to ensure growth, prosperity, and safe communities throughout the constituency.”

Schmalz advised that anyone wanting to learn more about him, or his campaign can reach out through his website.

“I truly believe the Saskatchewan Party is the best choice for Saskatchewan Rivers and our province. I will work tirelessly as a member of that party to advocate for policies that continue to promote growth, prosperity, and safer communities for everyone now, and into the future.”

At the time of the last provincial election in 2020, Nadine Wilson was a member of the Sask Party. Following a controversy in May, 2022 relating to Wilson’s vaccination status, she resigned from caucus, to as an independent.

However with the same month, Wilson announced plans to form a new political party called the Saskatchewan United Party. The party was officially launched earlier this month.

The next provincial election is scheduled for Oct. 28, 2024. Noting his current term as Reeve concludes around the same time, Schmalz said the stars aligned.
