Heavy Medal Thunder: local basketball clubs score big wins

Mar 23, 2023 | 8:00 AM

Prince Albert’s basketball community continues to grow, according to one coach from the P.A. Thunder.

The local basketball program recently wrapped up its winter campaign with some stellar performances with four teams making it far in the playoffs for the SMBA in Saskatoon.

The Bantam Girls A won gold; the Mini Girls A took silver; Jr. Boys won bronze playing in the Senior division and the Mini Boys A took home a consolation win

Coach Adie Schenk was overjoyed when talking about the past season and how much they have grown in the past couple of years.

“The growth that we saw in our athletes as teammates but also as human beings off and on the court was absolutely priceless,” she said. “As a coach, I can express being able to see our humans grow astronomically throughout the season, it was amazing.”

Schenk talked about the success and the medals won at the end of the SMBA season and her excitement for the spring season which gets underway March 26.

This is the program’s second year competing with Saskatoon Minor Basketball with over 90 athletes participating. The spring session will have even more, with over 130 players registered.

Schenk added the growth and success of basketball at the club level has translated to the exceptional performance in high school basketball, especially with the city hosting this year’s HOOPLA provincial championships.

“That’s a testament to how basketball is growing in our city.”
