A man who rammed into a police vehicle, while fleeing in a reported stolen vehicle, has received a four-year prison sentence.

Mitchell Pechawis from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation appeared on March 15 at Saskatoon Provincial Court.

While the 33-year-old was initially facing over a dozen charges, guilty pleas were entered to dangerous driving, possession of a firearm while prohibited from doing so, and assaulting a police officer with weapon.

The sentence also includes a three-year driving ban and a lifetime firearms prohibition.

The case itself dates back to the night of June 29th, 2022, when RCMP in the Warman area received a report of a suspicious vehicle. The investigation determined the vehicle had been reported stolen from Leask the day prior.

When they found the vehicle, officers activated their emergency lights and attempted a traffic stop. The suspect vehicle did not stop and proceeded to ram a police vehicle, before continuing to drive away.

The police vehicle was heavily damaged, while the officer sitting inside of it received minor injuries.

Approximately 10 minutes later, the stolen vehicle was located on Highway 12 and the driver (Pechawis) was arrested. A firearm was located and seized during the arrest.
