Raiders battle for playoff lives against Wheat Kings

Mar 17, 2023 | 12:00 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders (26-34-3-0) wrap up their season series with the Brandon Wheat Kings (26-30-8-0) Friday night as they visit Westoba Place for the final time this season.

The Raiders were on the losing end of their last contest, narrowly falling to the Winnipeg ICE 4-3. The loss came after P.A. downed the Saskatoon Blades in a monster 8-1 win. As for the season series, the Green and Gold have a chance to tie the season series, currently holding a 2-3-0-0 record against the Wheaties. Prince Albert has also been on a slight downward trend as of late, holding a last ten of 4-6-0-0.

Like the Raiders, Brandon have also fallen in six of their last ten. That includes their most recent games, which were back-to-back losses against Winnipeg (4-1, March 12) and Regina (6-3, March 15). The record also includes a win against PA back on March 7 when Brandon won 4-3.

The game is the opening contest of the final three-in-three weekend for the Raiders where after tonight, they’ll pack up and keep heading East onto Winnipeg to face the ICE on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. CST (7:05 p.m. CDT).

Brink of Elimination

The Raiders are playing for their playoff lives tonight, however, it’s quite the scenario in order for Prince Albert to be officially ruled out of contention.

There are three key things that need to happen tonight before they are eliminated:

1) Prince Albert loses to Brandon

2) Calgary defeats Lethbridge

3) Medicine Hat earns at least one point against Edmonton

Having all of these three things happen tonight, the Raiders would be officially out.

A look at the Eastern Conference standing heading into tonight’s matchup.

Who to Watch

Veteran Landon Kosior earned the third star in his last game against Winnipeg, netting a pair of first period assists. The two helpers held him reach 130 career points where he also sits just two points shy of the 60-point plateau (17g, 41a) with five games remaining on the schedule.

Forward Sloan Stanick continues his career year with the Green and Gold where he lit the lamp yet again against the ICE on Tuesday. The goal was his 24th of the season and 49th of his career, sitting just one goal short of 50.

Rookie Aiden Oiring, like Kosior, had two assists against Winnipeg earlier this week. The winger has split time with both the Raiders and the ICE this season, netting a combined 27 points (11g, 16a) in 54 games with 19 of those points (6g, 13a) coming with PA.
