‘Everyone had a great time’, Inaugural Canadian Tire Cricket Cup a huge success in PA

Seven cricket teams kicked off their 2023 campaigns on Saturday by competing against one another in the first-ever Canadian Tire Cricket Cup.

Teams from both Saskatoon and Prince Albert were involved which saw the Saskatoon Raptors defeat the Saskatoon Shahsawars in the finals to be the first to have their name etched into the trophy.

“The finals were great,” explained Mohib Mohammed, president of the Prince Albert Cricket Association. “Then we had Mr. Malcom Jenkins present the trophies as well as medals to the winners.”

Unfortunately for the P.A. squads, three of them failed to reach the playoffs. Despite this, Mohammed said that the competition was so tight that every team had the same chance of winning as the next.

“At the end of the day, it all came down to the run rate,” he said. “All the teams had an equal number of points, and it came down to who performed better that day. Like how quickly you finished the game and things like that. P.A. Panthers were short on points and with the Expats and the Huskies, they were up there but they couldn’t make it to the playoffs because of the run rate.”

He added that the future of cricket is bright in Prince Albert, with both indoor and outdoor tournaments being slated for later dates.
