Blue Mountain Adventure Park temporarily closes

For confidentiality reasons, the park could not provide further details on the closure to battlefordsNOW but did say it came into effect on March 3.

The Lighthouse, a supported living organization in Saskatoon, took over operations of Blue Mountain in the summer of 2012.

The company overseeing The Lighthouse and Blue Mountain are in receivership. Court documents filed in Court of King’s Bench by two former Lighthouse co-managing directors call for an interim receiver to take over the financial operations of the Lighthouse and Blue Mountain Adventure Park.

Over the past two years, the Saskatoon shelter has been mired in conflict over finances, firings and fire and building code violations.

The executive director of The Lighthouse was removed from his post by a court order after he was found to be using the charity’s funds for his own benefit.

According to court documents previously sealed by a publication ban, Don Windels used $60,000 of the charity’s funds to purchase a home for his daughter.

While Windels viewed the transaction as a loan, the judgment stated no loan was entered on the Lighthouse’s books, and the house was instead treated as a capital asset despite Windels having exclusive possession of the property.

The Saskatoon Fire Department has also issued fines to The Lighthouse over a series of code violations in the past several months.

According to the City of Saskatoon, there were 42 Fire Safety Act violations for issues like failing to maintain life safety systems and building systems— including fire alarms and sprinklers.

There were also issues with some pathways and evacuation routes out of the building being blocked, a lack of records and failure to maintain fire separations.

Blue Mountain Adventure Park said in its Facebook post that it will notify everyone if and when they are operating and taking reservations again.
