The CLL’s Canada Development Team is taking on the world this week at the IIJL Commonwealth Cup in Melbourne, Australia.

The tournament marks the first time a Canadian junior team has visited Australia.

Included on Canada’s 18-man roster are a number of Saskatchewan-born players.

Prince Albert’s Liam Netmaker played six games last year with the Prince Albert Predators and had two points over six games.

Also from Prince Albert is defenseman Matthew St. Germain, who is currently signed with the Saskatchewan SWAT out of Saskatoon.

Rounding out the Sask. contingent is Saskatoon’s Roman Marshall, Weyburn’s Ty Peterson and Swift Current’s Shane Friesen. Friesen helped backstop Canada to a fourth consecutive gold medal at the 2022 IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship in Winnipeg.

“Our Commonwealth Cup roster came together organically, meeting a few specific needs heading into the next few championships.” Head Coach Jeff Dowling said in a statement. “Our focus was on ’04s to ’06s, building their leadership qualities, providing them with a valuable experience, and taking a deeper look at what we have at that age group.”

The Canadian team roster will be utilized domestically to evaluate players ahead of the 2023 IIJL World Junior and World U18 Lacrosse Championships.

The four-day tournament starts Wednesday, and Canada plays Melbourne in its opening match.
