ICE edge Raiders 4-3 as playoff window shrinks further

PRINCE ALBERT, SK – The Winnipeg ICE scored four unanswered goals on Tuesday night to down the Prince Albert Raiders 4-3 at the Art Hauser Centre.

The loss comes after the Raiders steamrolled the Saskatoon Blades 8-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Raiders played their best first period of the season in the contest and PA head coach Jeff Truitt explained his thoughts on his team’s effort.

“I was really happy about how we generated speed and there wasn’t a lot of turnovers through the neutral zone because we just made simple plays, we didn’t over pass the puck, we didn’t overthink things, we just got pucks in deep and started to go to work and I thought that kept the flow going through the first period.”

“Exactly what we did in the first period, we didn’t do in the second,” he continued. “We turned pucks over, we tried to get cute through the neutral zone and they turned pucks over, got into their transition game and they’re an explosive team.”

Cole Peardon, Sloan Stanick, and Evan Herman were the goal scorers for PA while Landon Kosoir and Aiden Oiring each had a pair of helpers, and Grady Martin had one.

Matthew Savoie lit the lamp twice against PA along with Connor McClennon and Graham Sward also found the back of the net. Conor Geekie had a trio of assists while Jonas Woo, Owen Pederson, and Ben Zloty each had one.

Tikhon Chaika made 31 stops for PA where they fall to 26-34-3-0 on the campaign.

Daniel Hauser had 22 saves for the ICE as they improve to 53-9-1-0 on the year.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

The Raiders came to play in the opening frame and their efforts paid off as they held a 2-0 lead after the first. Peardon got PA on the board early in the period by deflecting a Kosior point shot while Stanick let a bomb go from the top of the right circle. Hauser got a piece of Stanick’s shot, but didn’t get enough as it just trickled past the goal line to double up the ICE.

The second was much of the opposite where it was all Winnipeg. The ICE hung three in the Raiders in the middle frame with markers from McClennon, Savioe, and Sward to turn the tides and make it 3-2 heading into the third.

Savoie added another in the third period to make it 4-2 before Herman scored with just over a minute to go in the game to pull PA back to within one.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, that’s as close as they’d come as Winnipeg took it 4-3.

The Raiders hit the road for a busy weekend slate, heading out east to Manitoba for the final three-in-three of the season. The party gets started on Friday at 7pm in Brandon against the Wheat Kings.
