Tax rates, tax breaks and fire hall locations on agenda

Mar 13, 2023 | 8:00 AM

The 2023 tax rate bylaw, along with a request from the new owners of Rivier Academy for an increased tax deduction, and allocating land for future fire halls, is all on the agenda.

Prince Albert city council has known for some years of the eventual need for additional fire halls at different locations in the city to improve response times.

Council will hear the fire department’s recommendation on two different lots, one near 15 Street and 15 Avenue and the other on the opposite side of town, on 28 Street near the Alfred Jenkins Field House.

As far as property taxes go, staff are putting forward a bylaw that would see a 2.86 per cent increase over last year’s mill rate.

The biggest change will be a doubling of the minimum tax on vacant land to $1,600 annually.

Another item on the agenda is a presentation by Dr. Terry Hayes with the Canadian Revival Centre and Elevation Academy of Prince Albert, which is in the old Rivier Academy building.

His letter asks council to consider increasing the tax break they receive now (36 per cent) to allow them to continue their operations.

Although the school portion of the facility gets funding from the province, it is 50 per cent of what public schools receive and does not include any money for facilities.

Council gathers at 4:00 pm on Monday for an executive committee meeting where they can choose to send items to a regular meeting for a decision or not act on them at all.
