Red Earth members elect Whitecap to be next Chief

Members of the Red Earth Cree Nation (RECN) have elected a new Chief and Council.

Zachary Whitecap officially beat out five others, including incumbent Fabian Head, to become the First Nations’ next leader.

A total of 736 votes were cast with around 35 per cent choosing Whitecap. Head came in second, followed by Philip M. Head, Helen Garvin, Robert Whitecap, and Jonathan Mckay.

Whitecap previously served as a Councillor for the RECN after being appointed in 2020.

As for the other five spots on the First Nation’s council.

Calehan Head will serve as Vice-Chief after getting the most votes. The other four elected are Barry Mckay, Cyril C. Head, Charlie Mckay, and Wilbert Head.

Nine others put their names forward to become a councillor but didn’t get enough votes.
