Mar 9, 2023 | 10:12 AM

At least one new councillor will be at the next meeting of Chief and Council for Red Earth First Nation as Zachary Whitecap has chosen to take on incumbent Fabian Head in the election for chief.

Also hoping to be chief are Phillip Head, Helen Garvin, Robert Whitecap and Johnathan McKay.

Three of the existing councillors also hope to retain their seats with Barry McKay, Calahan Head and Charlie McKay all having submitted nomination papers.

There are 11 other band members looking for votes during the election, which has gone on all week and ends today at 6:00 pm. Polling is at the school gymnasium.

Cyril Charles Head, Dean Nawakayas, Douglas Whitecap, Gail Head, Curtis McKay, Allister Nawakayas, Ray McKay, Ernestine Seyes, Ryan Young, Chester McKay and Wilbert Head all have names on the ballot.

After voting is done, a feast will be held in the community to announce and honour the newly elected leaders. The legacy of Hilliard Umpherville will also be honoured at the event. Umpherville served as a councillor from 2017 to 2022 and until his passing.

All band members are welcome to attend.
