Local students and police enjoy P.A. Raiders game

It was an experience like no other for several local youth and members of the Prince Albert Police Service.

On Tuesday night, local police officers and 25 students from W.J. Berezowsky School, St. Michael School, Westview School, Vincent Massey, and St. Catherine watched the Prince Albert Raiders and Brandon Wheat Kings game at the Art Hauser Centre.

The first-of-its-kind event was an expansion of Shop With a Cop at Christmas time, when local students bought Christmas gifts for their families at Canadian Tire.

“It’s just something that many members in the organization were thinking about what we can do to connect with the youth in the community,” said police chief Jonathan Bergen at the game.

“Our members are volunteering their time to take part, and we continue to see fantastic support from our community partners who are helping to make this event happen.”

While the outcome of the game may not have been what the kids and police hoped for, Bergen said it was still an experience the kids will never forget.

“For a few of the kids, it’s something they never experienced before,” he said. “They get to share that time with a different police officer, they get to have some pizza and some treats and see the Raiders in action.”

Bergen added the night was another way the police service is connecting with the community, something he values very much.

“It’s all about connecting with the community and making sure our youth have some unique opportunities that some of us take for granted,” he said.
