Carlton basketball tournament raises money for Hospice

Prince Albert’s Rose Garden Hospice has emerged as one of the victors, following this past weekend’s Charity of Choice basketball tournament at Carlton Comprehensive High School.

The winning team chooses which local cause they’d like to support, and the Carlton senior girls’ team was bestowed with the honour after going undefeated. Marina Mitchell with the Hospice Foundation, told paNOW she was grateful for the support.

“We are so proud of the senior girls team for playing hard and winning the tournament. We are especially honoured to be their charity of choice.Thank you girls and coaches,” Mitchell said.

Following a 70-27 win over Aden Bowman Friday night, the Crusaders went on to beat Walter Murray 59-31 Saturday morning.

In the final, the Crusaders faced Meadow Lake Carpenter and won 72-40.

The Charity of Choice tournament started four years ago, when the school decided to stop buying medals and trophies. The money was then put toward a local cause.

The facility, which is in the midst of construction, was named after Rose Daschuk, and one of Rose’s granddaughters plays for this year’s team.

When finished, the hospice will feature 10 beds along with lounge areas and a kitchen for families to use. It will also have office spaces for executives and volunteers and a fully functioning staff room.

Prince Albert basketball teams are now turning their attention to HOOPLA, which will be held this year in the city starting March 24.
