More Ukrainian families are coming into Prince Albert which means the need for supplies and donations is growing.

Sonya Jahn who has led the charge in helping these Ukrainian newcomers settle into the city was with another family who arrived this weekend.

“We had a family that arrived at 3 o’clock on Sunday morning,” she said. “We are in need of more additional items for the families as they arrive.”

The items needed include housewares like pots and pans, dishes, tables and chairs as well as personal hygiene items.

Jahn spoke to paNOW with the newest Ukrainian family outside the Service Canada building in South Hill Mall.

When asked how they felt being in Canada, the mother Maria gave a thumbs up saying they were grateful. Her 19-year-old son said they arrived in Prince Albert after travelling 23 hours by air.

Jahn added they are also in need of financial support and they’ve received a boost already from local philanthropist Malcolm Jenkins.

“He is donating $10,000 for the Ukrainian families that are settling in Prince Albert and we are looking to have that $10,000 matched by members of the community,” she said.

Financial donations can be made to the Calvary United Church Benevolent Fund for Settling Ukrainian families in Prince Albert while household items can be dropped off at MLA Alana Ross’ office on 15 Street East.

Arrangements for furniture drop-off can be made by phoning 306-930-9721.
