Prince Albert home invasion results in three year prison sentence

Within nearly three days of being arrested, a man who entered a stranger’s home and assaulted the woman living there has received a prison sentence of three years and four months.

Matthew Misponas of Île-à-la-Crosse appeared last Friday at Prince Albert Provincial Court. It was then that the 30-year-old entered guilty pleas to break-and-enter, possession of a weapon (bear mace), and breach of a previous court order.

Around 10:20 a.m. on Feb. 21, police received a report of break-and-enter at a residence in the 500 block of Fifth Street East.

After assaulting the woman inside, 30-year-old Misponas attempted to flee on foot but was arrested nearby. While he was found to be carrying bear mace, it was not used during the assault.

In a post made to social media, the victim described how Misponas had come in to the house and demanded money. When she attempted to run, he placed her in a headlock and while doing so punched her in the side of the face.

Fortunately the woman was able to break free and escaped out her back door. Police were called soon after.

When contacted by paNOW, the victim explained how the whole ordeal has left her feeling on edge and she’s scared of being at home.

The most recent crime statistics provided by the Prince Albert Police Service, are for the month of January. Over the course of 31 days, there were 18 reported break-and-enters to residential buildings.

There were also 140 reported assaults and 12 robberies.
