Dave Steuart Arena days are numbered

The end of the Dave G. Steuart Arena’s useful days look to be numbered as city council voted in favour of moving forward to close the building.

No decision will be final until it passes at a regular council meeting, but Mayor Greg Dionne explained the building needs more than just roof repairs.

“We can let go. There’s nowhere in the Cities Act that says we have to own an asset forever,” he said.

The cost to repair the roof along is over $400,000 and the dressing rooms also need to be done.

They are too small to accommodate players, even the small ones as they need an adult to tie their laces.

“We agreed with the report. To operate a rink, you need about 1,600 hours of ice time and once we open the other facilities, that rink will drop to about 130,” Dionne said.

Between the surfaces the city owns and the ones operated by community groups, there is a lot of ice to play on.

“We have the most ice surfaces in Canada, per capita,” Dionne said.

The Steuart Arena will remain open until the new twin pad facility is done but what will happen to the building has yet to be decided.
