‘Shouldn’t go unrecognized’: P.A. doctor set to receive award for work during pandemic

The medical health officer for Prince Albert is receiving an award for the work he did during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Khami Chokani has been chosen by the Victoria Hospital Foundation (VHF) to receive the MNP Award for Outstanding Achievement in Healthcare at this year’s Doctors Gala.

“The workload that he had and the incredible work he did just shouldn’t go unrecognized,” said Cody Barnett, the executive director for the VHF.

Chokani served as the professional voice P.A.’s city council used when contemplating certain restrictions which would help stop the spread of COVID. While some were against these types of measures, Chokani expressed just how important they were to stop people from needlessly dying from the virus.

“God brought me through for a purpose, not to just survive, but for a bigger reason,” said Chokani in a statement. “I am thankful for the love, support, and prayers of this amazing community.”

In his statement, Chokani mentioned his wife surprised him with the news. He’s also still wondering “whether I was dreaming.”

Meanwhile, Barnett explained that Chokani is also receiving this award for the work he did before the pandemic.

This included providing information to the public on other illnesses such as HIV, H1N1, measles, and influenza.

“He has a very critical and important job… being support, providing advice to all our medical teams,” Barnett said.

The Doctors Gala is scheduled for April 22, 2023. All the funds raised through the event will be used by VHF for various projects aimed at improving healthcare for those in and around Prince Albert and central and northern Saskatchewan.
