Province says no to funding request for mental health program at PACSD

The provincial government said it will not be funding a mental health support pilot program from the Prince Albert Catholic School Division (PACSD).

Earlier this year, the division sent the proposal for its Bridging Mental Health Support program, a two-year pilot. The response to that proposal was brought before the Board of Trustees at its meeting on Monday.

In a letter sent to the PACSD, Education Minister Dustin Duncan acknowledged the effort the division puts in to address mental well-being through the Centre for Trauma-Informed Practice for training related to Violence Threat Risk Assessment, as well as the Living Works suicide prevention training.

The Minister also congratulated the division for its successful application for the Mental Health Capacity Building program, which helps create an environment to promote positive mental health for students.

“The collaboration between the ministries of Health. Education and the Saskatchewan Health Authority has secured $2 million in annualized funding to support the MHCB project,” the letter reads.

However, the letter ended with a confirmation that the Ministry of Education would not be funding the Bridging Mental Health Support program.

“As the focus of the Ministry of Education is to address the educational needs of students rather than upon therapeutic actions which better aligns with other human services ministries, the Ministry of Education is not in the position to fund this proposal.”

The letter stated that Catholic Family Services currently receives funding through the ministries of Justice, Social Services and Corrections and Policing.
