La Ronge under extreme cold warning, -47 C wind chill expected overnight

Feb 1, 2023 | 4:49 PM

Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning Wednesday afternoon for La Ronge and other areas.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia. Extremely cold wind chill values between -45 and -50 C are expected.

Other areas under the warning are Candle Lake, Lac La Ronge and Narrow Hills Provincial Parks, the Prince Albert National Park, Montreal Lake and Pinehouse Lake.

The wind chill will moderate at times, however, extremely cold temperatures are forecasted to continue through much of the week. Environment Canada recommends watching for cold-related symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill,” the warning states. “If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.”

In La Ronge, the temperature is expected to reach -34 C tonight, but the wind will make it feel like -47 C.

Thursday will be mainly sunny with a high of -27 C and a low of -28 C with Friday being cloudy and -14 C and -17 C, respectively.
