Highlight reel plays were on display at Carlton High School this past weekend where they hosted the 2023 Special Olympics Saskatchewan Floor hockey Championships.

In total, 110 athletes from eight teams across the province participated in the tournament where the head organizer Ben Lozinsky told paNOW what the athletes are playing for.

“The top teams from this tournament will be identified and will have a chance to move on to the Special Olympics Canada National Winter Games next year in Calgary,” he explained.

Among the teams participating were the Lakeland Hawks, Lakeland Wolf Pack, Humboldt Broncos, Moose Jaw Cobras, Saskatoon Stingers, Swift Current Broncos, Regina Raptors, and Regina Vipers.

Lozinsky added that sits a pretty big deal for some of the athletes and that those competing have been waiting a while to get back out there to play.

“(The players) have been looking forward to this tournament all year,” he said. “It’s been a while since we’ve held a tournament because of the pandemic. Not only are the returnees really excited but there’s also that new wave of people coming through. So they’re looking forward, being serious, everyone’s trying to vie for that spot on Team Sask. next year.”

He went on to thank everybody for their support and for the great hospitality of the city and school.

As mentioned before, the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games was awarded to Calgary back in June. The winners from those games will move on to represent Canada at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in 2025.
