A field next to a local high school will one day have its one unique name following a decision by the Sask. Rivers School Division Board of Trustees.

At its meeting last Monday, the Board approved a request to start the naming process for a field next to Carlton High School. This decision starts the formal naming process which will take some time.

The first step is establishing a committee to look at different names.

Superintendent of Schools for the Division Garette Tebay said the community will include a diverse group of people including community members, Elders, administration staff and parents.

“We try to create a committee that has a good cross reference of our community,” she said.

According to the division’s Administrative Procedure 602, there are many pieces of criteria for naming a school facility, either after an individual, family, or organization.

This includes the support from those being honoured with the name, the significance of the area, individual or organization, the unique qualities of the person or group, and what impact they had in the community.

Right now, there’s no official timeline as to when this committee will be formed and start meeting. That will later be determined in a future Board meeting.

“We will have a naming recommendation report come forward,” said Tebay. “Typically those naming recommendation reports provide top five names and then a maximum of five alternative names to be considered.”

Eventually, there will be a discussion and vote on which name should be chosen. At that time, an official announcement will be made to officially close the naming process.
