Melfort man charged after standoff at Muskoday First Nation

Jan 11, 2023 | 4:41 PM

Saskatchewan RCMP has provided additional details as to why there was a heavy police presence at Muskoday First Nation on Tuesday.

At approximately 7:05 a.m., there was a report of a robbery. Officers from the Prince Albert RCMP and Prince Albert Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan immediately responded.

The investigation determined two men assaulted another man and stole a bottle of alcohol from him. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the two suspects left in a vehicle.

The vehicle was later located parked outside a residence in the community. When officers approached the residence, a man fled from it on foot. Police believed he was potentially armed with firearms.

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services and Critical Incident Response Team were called to assist with the search for the suspect. The police dog tracked him to a residence and officers set up a perimeter around it to help maintain public safety.

He surrendered to police without incident a few hours later and was arrested. Waylon Daniels, 27, from Melfort has since been charged with one count of robbery.

He was also arrested on warrants for assault, failing to attend court, and driving while prohibited.

Daniels is scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Thursday.

Search warrants were then executed at two residences on Muskoday First Nation as part of the ongoing investigation into the robbery and the whereabouts of any firearms connected to these incidents.

No firearms were located as a result of the search warrants.

As an added precaution Tuesday, Muskoday Community School was placed on hold and secure.
