Council will discuss pre-pay fuel bylaw, FNUniv land deal on Monday

A proposal for the city to make pre-paying for fuel mandatory is on the Monday agenda for council’s first executive committee meeting of the year.

The recommendation comes from the Prince Albert Board of Police Commissioners, which says that gas-and-go crimes have increased in the city.

In 2019, there were 89 incidents with the volume dropping for the first year of the pandemic but jumping to 115 in 2021 and 118 this year.

According to the submission, PAPS says investigating the thefts takes a significant amount of time.

The average value of fuel stolen is $60, but ranges depending on the theft.

No decision will be made as yet but the proposal is to have council refer it to the police to consult with business owners to see that they think.

Before the executive committee meeting, council will hold a special regular council meeting to discuss a request for five acres of land from the First Nation’s University.

FNU wants to build a new campus in Prince Albert and asked the city for five acres of land south of the Alfred Jenkins Field House for $1.

In order to build the facility, FNU will also need to get a federal government grant and says first they need a letter of intent from the city about the land.

If successful, the money for the build would come from Infrastructure Canada’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings fund, which FNU applied to last year unsuccessfully.

Then they had hoped to build next to Sask. Polytech but have now changed locations.

The building would be two stories and 40,000 square feet and designed to a zero carbon standard.

Economic impacts are assessed at a GDP of $16 million, 178 jobs annually and labour income of $10 million.
