Alleged thieves get stuck in snowy field while trying to flee: RCMP

Jan 5, 2023 | 11:06 AM

Three people are facing charges in connection to a series of events southeast of Prince Albert on New Year’s Eve, including a car chase that abruptly ended with a truck getting stuck in a snowy field.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., Prince Albert RCMP received a report of a suspicious skid steer and trailer parked at a residence on Muskoday First Nation.

The investigation determined the skid steer and trailer were reported as stolen from a residence in Birch Hills earlier that same day. Three individuals in a white truck were seen nearby.

The same truck was driven past the officers as they were investigating the residence on Muskoday.

The officers got into their police vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The truck didn’t stop and continued travelling to Highway 3, before turning onto Lake Park Road, then into a snowy field. That’s where the truck got stuck in the snow and the three occupants were arrested.

Inside the vehicle, officers located and seized a firearm and ammunition, which had been improperly stored and were within reach of the occupants.

Joel Reese, 32, from Connaught, Sask., and Jordache Bear, 31, from Muskoday First Nation, are each facing two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000, as well as single counts of flight from police, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized.

At the time of her arrest, Bear also had outstanding warrants from Melfort RCMP for theft under $5,000 and failing to comply with an undertaking.

Meanwhile, Bruce Ahenakew, 39, from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation is charged with flight from police, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized.

He also had an outstanding warrant from Ahtahkakoop RCMP for assault and theft under $5,000.

All three individuals have pending court dates.
