SLIPS AND FALLS

What to do if you slip and fall during the cold snap

Dec 19, 2022 | 4:00 PM

The cold weather over the weekend kept first responders busy with responses to slips and falls.

Paramedics with Parkland Ambulance responded to several calls this past weekend, many of them weather-related.

“Certainly, a significant number of slips and falls that were weather related,” said Lyle Karasiuk with Parkland Ambulance, noting there were around 12 incidents they responded to as of noon on Sunday.

With the cold weather expected to remain throughout the week, Karasiuk has some advice if you happen to be out on the sidewalks, particularly if you stumble on the ice.

“If you happen to take a tumble, the human instinct is to want to get up and get going again because we’re embarrassed,” he said noting that you shouldn’t instantly get up after you’ve fallen. “Do yourself a favour, take 20 seconds or 30 seconds.”

He said this is a good way to see if you are seriously injured from the fall.

“If there is pain, that’s a sure sign that maybe that needs a little look at,” he said.

He added if you need medical assistance, to be patient until the help arrives.

Above all, if you are wandering outside, make sure you are properly layered and protected against the cold.

“On these bitterly cold days, all of us are doing everything we can to stay warm,” said Karasiuk.

The forecast in Prince Albert this week calls for highs within the -20s with windchills dropping that temperature into the -30s on some nights.
