Breaking down the numbers

Vehicle thefts, assaults and shoplifting complaints trend upward in November

Dec 19, 2022 | 4:25 PM

Motor vehicle thefts have been an ongoing concern for Prince Albert police throughout the year, and the month of November showed no signs of the culprits slowing down.

There were related 28 incidents last month, working out to almost one each day.

For the full 11 months of the year, there have been 413 vehicles reported stolen.

While robberies saw little change when comparing year-versus-year monthly numbers, there has been a noticeable 70-per-cent increase when looking at the year-to-date stats.

Up until Nov. 30, there were 140 robberies reported, which compared to 82 last year in the same time period.

The third area of concern is assaults. There were 88 reported last month, which was 14 more than the same month last year.

Year-to-date though, there has been a 66-per-cent increase over the same 11-month period last year, with 1,205 versus 724.

On a more positive note, there were some areas trending downward such as impaired driving. There were five incidents last month which was a little less than half of what was reported in Nov 2021.

Year-to-date there has been a 33 per cent decrease.

Another positive trend for the police service has been the number of breaks in for sheds and garages which can be attributed to the work of the proactive policing unit.

While there was a slight increase year over when comparing individual months, there continues to be a 46 per cent decrease when comparing overall year-to-date numbers.

In total, Prince Albert Police received 3,054 calls for service last month. This compared to 3,668 during the previous November.

Year-to-date there have been 42,369 calls for service.
