Christmas Bird Count in Prince Albert – December 18, 2022

Dec 14, 2022 | 11:29 AM

What is a Christmas Bird Count and who are those ‘binocular carrying folk’ in my neighbourhood?

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) was established in 1900 -Audubon Society- as an alternative to shooting everything with feathers or fur on Christmas Day.

Counts have been occurring in Saskatchewan for almost 80 years.

Why count birds at this time of year?

A bad day in the field is better than a good day in the office!

It’s for the birds.

Monitoring the status and distribution of populations is the primary reason. These numbers show trends, and can flag challenges for groups or a single species caused by climate change, pesticide use, breeding habitat loss, avian disease, etc. It’s also for the participants. Aiding a first-timer, friendly competition, seeing an uncommon species like a cardinal, sharing of knowledge and enthusiasm, fresh air and exercise are but a few reasons for participating.

Those folk carrying binoculars (spotting scopes, long lens cameras, notebooks, clip boards, red noses, smiles) are the Christmas bird counters.

We would be happy to include you in the count this year. Contact Kim Clark, President Nature PA at natureprincealbert@gmail.com.
