A Quebec-based company is trying to become one of the global leaders in vertical farming.

Winter Farm announced on Tuesday it raised $46 million thanks to multiple investors and Quebec’s government which will be used to help produce around one million kilograms of strawberries every year.

They plan on doing this by building six 600 square metre vertical farms, which grow crops in vertically stacked layers, adding onto their two already in operation.

“The arrival of new partners is a vote of confidence in favour of Winter Farm’s industrial potential and our ability to deliver superior quality fruit,” Alain Brisebois, president and CEO of Winter Farm, said.

Winter Farm explained this will not only help with production but allow them to use between 20 to 25 times less space compared to open field production, recover 90 per cent of irrigation water used, and limit greenhouse gases.

“Innovation is key to developing a more sustainable and competitive local agriculture that can challenge import markets,” Brisebois added.

Winter Farm didn’t give a timeline on when the farms will be operational, only that it will happen sometime in the coming months.
