P.A. university student receives scholarship aimed at recognizing women leaders

The University of Regina is awarding a scholarship to a Prince Albert student.

Krysta Alexson found out on Wednesday she had been awarded the RBC Woman in Leadership Scholarship.

Alexson told paNOW being recognized is always special, but this grant has her feeling above and beyond.

“We’re always underrepresented as women in leadership and management,” she said. “It’s something we need to see more of.”

This scholarship was something Alexson had to apply for.

Her application featured all the projects that students with the First Nations University of Canada in Prince Albert have recently done as she’s the school’s northern campus student association president.

This includes painting a crosswalk orange in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and offering food hampers to students struggling during the pandemic.

While she didn’t do these projects alone, they are something Alexson is very proud of. She also explained that getting a scholarship because of them is also something she didn’t expect would happen.

“Just to know that someone is watching and recognizing the work I do,” said an over joyous Alexson.

She didn’t want to share how much funding she got through the scholarship, only that it will help pay the bills during the winter semester.

Alexson is working towards a Bachelor of Indigenous Business and Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Studies. She’s also aiming to earn a hospitality and tourism certificate, an Indigenous Band Management certificate, and a Liberal Arts Diploma.
