Over 30 Ukrainian families in the process of moving to P.A. after job fair

Dec 5, 2022 | 1:00 PM

Prince Albert’s already large Ukrainian community could potentially double in size in the coming weeks.

A job fair was held in Regina for newcomers last week, giving those who recently fled their home due to Russia’s invasion the chance to choose where in the province they want to live.

Sonya Jahn, who oversees all of P.A.’s newcomers, told paNOW 31 families are now in the process of moving to the city.

“We came up with a good marketing strategy to entice families,” she said. “We’re the third largest city in the province. I think we have a lot to offer for these new families.”

This includes ample amount of job opportunities.

Several businesses have already hired newcomers, while others have reached out to Jahn about potential opportunities. Multiple interviews have already been set up for this coming Wednesday.

Jahn explained P.A.’s Ukrainian community was also very enticing for new families. Currently, there are 36 families living in P.A. When including individuals who also moved to the city, there are well over 100 newcomers.

Jahn added the entire community has become one giant family, supporting each other as they get used to their new lives.

“It’s so important to build that community,” she said.

It’s not 100 per cent confirmed all these families will move to P.A. If they can’t get a job, there’s a good chance they’ll look at another community.

It’s also possible another city may entice them before they officially move. Jahn noted there were nine families they were confident would move to P.A. before the job fair, however, eight are now moving to communities in the southern part of the province.

“I’m hoping that they do,” Jahn added.

Meanwhile, anyone who may have space for the city’s newcomers to live in, whether it be an apartment, house, or room to rent, are asked to contact Jahn at 306-930-9721.
