Convicted killer found at home in La Ronge

Dec 2, 2022 | 5:20 PM

The man convicted of killing a restaurant owner in La Ronge in April 2017 had been re-captured by police.

Austin Bird, 24, was out of jail on statutory release following the killing of Simon Grant, a crime to which he pleaded guilty to in 2017.

Two youths and Matthew Nagy-Charles were also charged in connection with the robbery and killing of Grant.

In November, Corrections Canada issued a warrant for Bird.

The combined efforts of the RCMP’s Warrant Enforcement and Suppression Team (WEST), local officers and some tips from the public led to Bird’s capture shortly after 9:00 pm on November 29.

Police said they conducted proactive patrols, attended areas where Bird was known to frequent, and gathered information through neighbourhood inquiries and interviews.

They learned he was in a home in the community and found and arrested him without incident the same day.
