‘Monstrous Pollution’ art collection sends message of environmental concern

Some students in Prince Albert are worried about the future when it comes to caring for the environment, and have illustrated that concern with art.

Both Marie Bear and Cassidy McDonald are in Grade 12 at Carlton Comprehensive and are part of a combined art and poetry project called Monstrous Pollution.

“It was a lot of fun getting to write the poetry to go along with the message of each sort of monster that was presented on the canvas,” said Bear.

The works of art and poetry are hanging on the walls of South Hill Mall, and are drawing some attention, which is the goal of the project.

Cassidy said part of what she enjoyed about doing the project was the correlation between the artists starting one part of a poem and then passing it to another writer who added their piece and continuing it until the poem was done.

“We all put our own work into creating one big piece. This is what is needed to help fight pollution,” she said. “One person can’t just save the world. Basically, we all have to put in our part to help save the environment.”

Around Prince Albert, Cassidy has noticed the amount of trash that are visible every time the snow melts.

She would like viewers of the Monstrous Art project to understand the idea that pollution is a very real concern, even in Saskatchewan.

“This very real thing is in the minds of a lot of young people because we worry every day that we have to grow up in this world that is slowly dying because the older generation didn’t really take care of it,” said Cassidy.

Picking up the trash is a small step in the right direction.

“But also being aware of our day-to-day usage of each resource that we use such as water, heat, electricity,” she said.
