Raiders Beat Hitmen

Set-up man Stanick steers Raiders past Hitmen

For the second consecutive game, the Prince Albert Raiders racked up five goals on an Alberta opponent. And for the second game in a row, it was the big guns firing away that provided the offense.

Keaton Sorenson scored twice and Sloan Stanick turned in a four-assist evening as the Raiders beat the Calgary Hitmen by a score of 5-2. Owen Boucher, Landon Kosior, and Evan Herman supplied the other goals, while Tikhon Chaika stopped 32 of 34 shots.

Stanick’s vision helped the Raiders open the scoring as he spotted Boucher creeping in from the left point in the first period. Hitting him with a cross-seam pass, he gave Boucher all the room he needed to roof his second goal of the season, and second in the building.

A backhander from Trey Patterson squared the score before the first period was out, and the Hitmen wasted no time taking the lead in the second. Just 48 seconds in, Zac Funk headed for the net with his stick down and tipped home a backhander to put the Hitmen up by one.

Calgary had the momentum and seemed to keep it, until Herman chopped a shot toward the Hitmen net that leaked through Peters, sitting behind him just long enough for Sorenson to swipe it home. Later in the second, at four-on-four, Stanick struck again, this time feeding Kosior coming in from the right point for a near-replay of the first Raiders goal to give them the lead.

Sorenson provided a little insurance on a power play in the third, burying a wrap-around feed from Stanick while there was a chaotic scene in the Hitmen crease. Herman provided more, set up by Stanick again and sent in alone, finishing with a neat forehand tuck to put the Raiders up by three.

Immediately after the Raiders got their three-goal cushion, the Hitmen got a power play, and on the very first faceoff of the man advantage, they went right to the net. But Chaika held them off.

As time bled down in the third period, the Raiders held the Hitmen largely to the outside and even tightened up what had been a lopsided shot clock. The result was an impressive 5-2 win against a difficult opponent on the road.

It will be another road game and another difficult opponent next for the Raiders as they face the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday night. Puck drop is 8:00 Saskatchewan time on 900 CKBI.
