Thousands of affordability cheques still not in the mail

There was an answer provided Wednesday to the question on many people’s minds in Saskatchewan: “Where is my affordability cheque?”

In the Legislature on Wednesday, Premier Scott Moe explained the status of the cheques’ delivery.

“There are actually 450,000 cheques that are out,” he said. “(There are) remaining about 375,000 to go out. So about $225 million is in the hands of Saskatchewan people as we speak.”

NDP Leader Carla Beck responded that the rollout of the payments shows the Saskatchewan Party government is out of touch.

“Nine months into an affordability crisis and most adults in this province have yet to see a dime of relief,” Beck said in the Legislature.

While Beck said some people might not receive their cheques until December, Moe said he believed they would all be out this month.

Moe promised the $500 cheques to all adults in the province in August.

The cheques, meant to help Saskatchewan residents handle inflation, are being sent out using information from the 2021 tax year.

The first batch was mailed out on Nov. 14.
