P.A. named ‘greenest’ city in Canada

Prince Albert is being called Canada’s ‘greenest’ city by a real estate company out of Alberta.

Calgary.com recently ranked cities across the country by how much parkland, green area, and community gardens they have.

They put P.A. at the top of the list as they claim 20 per cent of the city is parkland. They also reported that P.A. has around 28 hectares of park per 1,000 people.

“I think this is something that we’ve always known but to put a number to it really helps enhance the type of green space that we have here,” Tim Yeaman, parks and open spaces manager for the City of P.A. said.

Calgary.com ended up giving P.A. a ‘green score’ of 100 out of 100.

Yeaman highlighted several areas that helped the city reach a perfect score. They included Kinsmen Park, Prime Minister Park, and the Rotary Trail.

“I think we’re really privileged,” he added.

However, the top spot, for Yeaman, is Little Red River Park.

“We certainly have lots of visitors from across the province and out of province that come to Little Red because we have a lot of great things to offer and a lot of that is due to our user groups,” he said.

P.A. apparently had very little competition in this ranking.

Coming in second was Edmonton, Alberta with a score of just over 80 out of 100. The tenth-place city, Kitchener, Ontario, actually scored under 50.

Calgary and Vancouver were the only other western cities to come in the top 10, placing fifth and ninth respectively.

The other cities to make the list were Gatineau, Toronto, Guelph, Thunder Bay, and Waterloo.
