Team White defeats Team Green in Raiders ‘Skills Night’

Nov 22, 2022 | 9:24 PM

For the first time in over 10 years, the Prince Albert Raiders hosted their Skills Night where players were split into teams and competed in five different competitions.

The night featured games that you see during the NHL’s skills competition, like Fastest Skater, the team Relay Race, Hardest Shot, Shot Accuracy, and the Breakaway Challenge.

Team White won Skills Night in exciting fashion, winning 36-35 on the last shot in the Breakaway Challenge courtesy of Tikhon Chaika.

Carson Latimer took home the best time in the Fastest Skater competition with 13.14 seconds, narrowly beating Team Green teammate Brayden Dube (13.22 sec) and Team White’s Evan Herman (13.24 sec).

For the Relay Race, Team Green beat out Team White on the last skater. Evan Herman messed up on the final obstacle for Team White which opened the door wide open for Team Green’s Sloan Stanick to come from behind to steal the win from Team White.

The Hardest Shot competition saw a three-way tie for first that was eventually decided by a tie breaker. Eric Johnston from Team Green and Tyrell Goldsmith and Hayden Pakkala from Team White each registered 90mph on the gun. But in the end, it would be Johnston who came out on top with a 95mph rocket to win it for Team Green.

Raiders rookie Ryder Ritchie went on to win the Shot Accuracy competition for Team White, hitting all four targets in just four shots. Team White’s Easton Kovacs finished in second, needing only five shots while Team Green’s Carson Latimer needed six shots to hit all the targets.

And for the Breakaway Challenge, it came down to the goalies to decide who would win the 2022 Raiders Skills Night. Team Green led Team White 31-30 heading into the final competition where each player was given two shots each. The players went first where it was Brayden Dube, Justice Christensen, Cole Peardon, and Sloan Stanick who scored for Team Green, while Carter Andersen, Tyrell Goldsmith, Hayden Pakkala, Easton Kovacs, and Ryder Ritchie scored for Team White.

The score was 35 all by the end of it and as a tie breaker, the teams decided to test out each netminder’s breakaway skills. Max Hildebrand couldn’t find a way past Chaika on either of his shot and chose an interesting approach for his second shot, using bare hands with a normal stick. This proved costly for Hildebrand and for Team Green because when Hildebrand when to retrieve his glove, blocker and stick, Chaika made a dash for the net and scored on the empty cage to win it for Team White on a walk-off goal.

After tonight, the Raiders have a couple days off before their back on the road to South Central Alberta. The club is preparing for its second 3-in-3 weekend of the season which they’ll kickoff on Friday night in Calgary against the Hitmen. Puck drop is at 8:00pm CST.

See below for the overall results from tonight’s competitions, along with who participated and the order they participated in. The winners of each competition are highlighted in bold.
