Convicted murderer to serve out remainder of sentence in community
A man who shot and killed a well-respected Prince Albert volunteer in 2015, will soon re-enter the community to serve the remainder of his sentence.
The 21-year-old, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was 14 years old at the time of the incident in 2015. The body of Marina Thorpe, 64, was found on a walking path in the city’s Crescent Heights neighbourhood.
In early 2018, the man received a 10-year sentence, with six years to be served in custody and the remaining four years to be served under community supervision.
Ten years is the maximum sentence a youth can receive for first-degree murder. As part of his sentence, the man was ordered to undergo intensive rehabilitation, and was subject to annual reviews. The most recent one occurred on Nov. 4. and it was agreed the open custody stage of the sentence would commence on Dec. 1.
