MELFORT, Sask. – A wartime agreement between Russia and Ukraine will continue, allowing grain shipments from Ukraine to resume.

The United Nations said the deal will be extended by 120 days.

The initiative established a safe shipping corridor in the Black Sea.

It also included inspection procedures to address Russian and Ukrainian concerns that cargo vessels travelling off Ukraine’s southern coast might carry weapons or launch attacks.

Western Canada’s largest organic conference is underway in Saskatoon, Sask.

Canada holds the title of being the fifth-largest organic consumption market in the world, and global demand continues to increase.

Saskatchewan has 1,025 organic operations on 1.2 million acres, which is 29 per cent of all land under organic management in Canada. Total Manitoba organic acres is at 102,000, while there are roughly 607,000 acres of organic land in Alberta.

The Organic Connections Conference Chair Marla Carlson said the event is a non-profit platform for the prairie organic industry to promote the sector through education and awareness, as well as numerous other activities and events.

Direct Farm Manitoba is receiving funding to support its Manitoba Community Food Currency Program, which works to improve food security for Manitobans in need while also supporting local agri-businesses.

Manitoba Agriculture Minister Derek Johnson said exceptional inflationary measures continue driving up the cost of food, and more Manitobans face the burden of being unable to meet their own and their family’s nutritional needs.

“This unique food currency initiative helps ensure Manitobans in need have reliable and equitable access to healthy food that promotes their well-being, while simultaneously supporting farmers’ markets and local agri-product businesses,” Johnson said

Direct Farm Manitoba launched the program in 2020 so people could purchase locally produced fruit, vegetables, meat, and processed foods at farmers’ markets.

There are 26 participating markets in Winnipeg and in rural areas.

The Manitoba Government is providing nearly $1.1 million over three years.
