Annoying Bugs

P.A. seeing increase in cockroach infestations

Nov 15, 2022 | 5:00 PM

Cockroach infestations in Prince Albert are on the rise.

That’s according to Tyrone Pest Control Services who told paNOW they’ve seen a noticeable increase in the number of calls they’re getting compared to last year.

While not having any exact numbers, they claim they’ve been called to deal with multiple infestations in apartment buildings as well as individual properties. In fact, Tyrone Pest Control said the number of cases in homes has been a bit shocking.

One family who’s been dealing with cockroaches has been Ethan Peterson’s.

He along with his girlfriend Alanna and their daughter Eva has been dealing with cockroaches for several weeks.

“We noticed a bunch of cockroaches crawling on the cupboards, where we serve our food, where our daughter eats,” Peterson explained.

He said at one time Alanna shook their garbage can and around 20 bugs fell out.

Their apartment building has since been sprayed; however, they’re still seeing some cockroaches from time to time.

“My girlfriend doesn’t like bugs; I don’t like bugs myself,” Peterson said. “We just started stomping, killing them.”

As to what caused the infestation, the family has their guesses but doesn’t have a concrete answer.

Sharon Ross also experienced cockroaches in her apartment, as well as her son’s. The pair lived in the same building.

She explained her son started to notice bugs in August, one at a time.

After living with him and his family while her apartment was being renovated, she moved her stuff into her own place and soon started noticing cockroaches.

Ross said she’s since moved out and has no intention of coming back.

“I decided to move out because I’m not going to be 59 years old and live with bedbugs or cockroaches or anything.”

She claims her apartment, along with several others in the building, was sprayed by Tyrone Pest Control Services. Ross added she spoke with the exterminator who mentioned the infestation may have been caused by one tenant who kept bottles and garbage in their apartment.

“He said ‘when I walked in, I had to back up because there were cockroaches all over the floor and all over the walls right at the doorway.”

Ross is currently in talks with the apartment’s landlord to try and get her security deposit back so she can afford a new place to stay. She stated that leadership with Montreal Lake Cree Nation, where she is from, stepped up to support her and her family during this time.
