Not guilty pleas entered in Lakeland carjacking case

A man charged after a carjacking incident last month in the Lakeland area, is maintaining his innocence.

Cory Halkett, 32, entered not guilty pleas and when the matter was spoken to Wednesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court, a trial date was set for Feb. 9, 2023.

The case dates back to the afternoon of Oct. 18 when Prince Albert RCMP received a robbery report. A disabled vehicle was parked on the side of Highway 263.

A man approached the vehicle, pointed a firearm at the occupants and forced them to stay inside it. The occupants were later able to escape without injury and called police.

The suspect was located soon after, but ran away into a nearby forest when informed by officers he was under arrest.

The next morning, RCMP received several complaints that the suspect was on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation side of Little Red River Park.

Officers, with help from Prince Albert Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan and conservation officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch, were able to locate the man and arrest him without incident.

Halkett, who is from La Ronge, faces two counts of unlawful confinement, two counts of armed robbery, one count of carrying a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and one count of use of a firearm in the commission of an offence.
