Snow business is bad business for downtown pizza place

Having a big dump of snow is bad for business when you’re in the pizza business and sales are dependent on drivers being able to navigate city streets.

Crown Pizza supervisor Mansoor Iqbal said they closed Sunday afternoon because of the snowfall and he wonders why the city is not quicker with removing snow.

“This is an emergency right now. It’s an emergency situation because they never clean the road,” Iqbal said.

He said in larger cities, the roads are cleared more quickly and wondered how well the city prepares for large snowfalls.

“I don’t know if they don’t have enough machines, but this is the entire responsibility of the city to clean the roads,” he said.

After challenges last year with near record snowfalls, the city reviewed its snow clearing policies.

Council was given an update several weeks ago on what staff would like to see but no recommendations were made on increasing the amount of equipment being used.

Discussion included topics such as allowing up to one third of sidewalks to be used to pile snow and how windrows and snowlifts will be dealt with in school zones.

Mayor Greg Dionne said that compared to other cities, Prince Albert does a good job of snow clearing, particularly in residential areas.

“Especially when it comes to residential street cleaning, try going around the residences in other cities that are bigger than ours and see if you have any luck,” he said.

As of early this afternoon, crews had cleared all of the priority one roads and started on priority two streets but another 10 to 15 cm is expected to fall.

“We have a lot of snow, making driving difficult today. We can’t get to it all. Not all at once, anyway. But the crews have been out there, relentlessly clearing streets over the weekend and since 5 am this morning,” said the city in an email.

Red routes are cleared first followed by those in blue. If more snow comes, crews start again on Priority 1 before finishing all the streets. (Map – City of Prince Albert)

Owners of vehicles in areas marked blue are asked to keep their vehicles off the streets to allow the snowplows access.

If the snow falls as predicted, crews do not finish the previous plan but start over on priority one.
