A historic season is complete for a local football club.

The Bantam Prince Albert River Riders are undefeated Kinsmen Football League Champions for the first time ever.

In a close game where both defences were strong, and the winter weather was a factor, a blocked conversion after a Saskatoon Raiders touchdown was the deciding play, as the River Riders held on to win 7-6.

Head coach Joey Hemsworth said it was the perfect way to cap off a memorable season.

“They battled the conditions, it wasn’t ideal weather. We went and seven points, enough to do the job. Once again, our defence did a good job. They had a big interception at the end of the game to seal the deal.”

For Hemsworth and everyone involved with the River Riders, the win was also bittersweet as it capped of weeks of hard work for the fall season.

“We’ve been going at it for two and a half months, obviously it’s a historic season (and) the kids gave it their all,” he said. “A great way to finish it with the hard-fought battle in the snow.”

Hemsworth joked with the kids you truly haven’t had a good football season in Canada if you haven’t played a game in the snow.
