Raiders snap three-game skid against Americans

PRINCE ALBERT, SK – The Prince Albert Raiders started November off on the right foot on Tuesday night, defeating the Tri-City Americans 5-4 at the Art Hauser Centre.

The win comes three days after falling 5-4 to the Swift Current Broncos at home.

“We asked a lot of players here tonight to grind it out and do the right things,” said head coach Jeff Truitt. “The first period was great, the first couple minutes of the second were great, and then we didn’t solidify anything hard in our own zone and all of a sudden, they get four on you. But we got a timely goal in the third period and grinded it out. I thought Lodewyk was good here tonight, Sorensen was good, Anderson as well. We had to win some faceoffs and when we did, we made some good plays coming out of our own zone. And when we didn’t, we seemed to cover things pretty well.”

Landon Kosior led the scoresheet for Prince Albert, netting two goals and two assists in the contest. Carson Latimer and Keaton Sorensen each came in a close second with three points each, with Latimer netting three assist and Sorensen potting a goal and two assists. Raider captain Nolan Allan also got in on the fun scoring a goal and an assist, while Niall Crocker added a goal and Harrison Lodewyk had an assist.

Ethan Ernst, Jake Sloan, Parker Bell, and Drew Freer were the goal-getters for the Americans in the game, while Adam Mechura, Alex Serraglio, Lukas Dragicevic, Deagan McMillan, and Tyson Greenway were the assist-getters.

Tikhon Chaika turned aside 25 shots in the win, helping the Raiders improve to 4-9-2-0 on the campaign.

Tomas Suchanek made 22 stops for Tri-City where the Americans now fall to 6-7-0-0 on the year.

The last time these teams met was back on Nov. 12, 2018 and the reunion didn’t waste anytime getting started with lots of action in the opening frame.

The period saw lots of goals from the Raiders and even included a line-brawl that broke out midway through the first following a Carter Anderson hit. The hit sent an Americans defender into the boards hard which prompted a response from Tri-City. A scrum ensued where multiple fights broke out and resulted in fighting majors issued to four players. Two players from either bench were also ejected. Prince Albert’s Zach Wilson and Tri-City’s Andrew Fan were both sent to the showers early.

Shortly after, the dam broke and the goals came flooding in for the green and gold.

The Raiders went on to score three times in the first which included Crocker breaking the tie, followed by back-to-back powerplay goals from Sorensen and Kosior.

Shortly after Kosior’s marker, Americans forward Reese Belton sent Kayden Pakkala head first into the boards, leading to a penalty for Tri-City. Pakkala was shaken up but stayed in the game. As for Belton, he was issued a game-misconduct for his actions and was sent to the dressing room. PA led 3-0 after one period of play.

Believe it or not, the second period was just as, if not more action-packed than the first.

The Raiders got back on the powerplay early to start the period and they would cash in yet again. This time, Allan got in on the scoring parade and scored his third of the season to give PA the 4-0 advantage.

But that fourth goal lit a fire under the Americans that the Raiders couldn’t seem to get control of.

Tri-City went on a tear after Allan’s goal, scoring four times in less than ten minutes of play to tie it back up. Ernst, Sloan, Bell, and Freer each scored for the Americans to make it a tie game after two periods of play.

The scoring drought for the Raiders was broken on the powerplay just over a minute into the third. Kosior snapped his second of the game and passed a screened Suchanek to help PA regain the lead.

A scary moment happened just a few minutes later when Sorensen went down after an attempted hit by a Tri-City player and was slow to get up. Play was blown dead and Sorensen was unable to get off the ice under his own power. Thankfully, he would be okay and stayed in the game.

The Americans pulled the goalie for the extra attacker but they couldn’t convert as the Raiders defused the comeback attempt from the Tri-City Americans with the 5-4 win.

Prince Albert is back at home for their next contest where they will welcome the Moose Jaw Warriors to the Art Hauser Centre for the first time this season on Friday night.
