MELFORT, Sask. – The Brandt Group of Companies has partnered with the John Deere Foundation of Canada to support the people impacted by Hurricane Fiona.

The $100,000 donation will go to the Canadian Red Cross which provides direct support to communities through Atlantic Canada hit by the storm Sept. 24 and 25.

Brandt CEO Shaun Semple said Hurricane Fiona hit close to home.

“We have deep roots in Atlantic Canada and have been eager to support the people and communities that were devastated in last month’s storm,” Brandt said

Brandt has 13 branch locations in the affected region, serving hundreds of local customers that are actively working on the recovery.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has announced a $6.9 million campaign to save a distinctive landscape near Waterton Lakes National Park in southern Alberta.

The 1,600-hectare property, which is called The Yarrow, is near the hamlet of Twin Butte— about 80 kilometres southwest of Lethbridge.

NCC said the property features grasslands, wetlands, creeks, and mixed forests. The area includes 27 wildlife species of provincial or national significance including grizzly bears, a type of bird called bobolinks, and little brown bats.

Over $13 million has been raised toward the $20 million goal and NCC is now turning to the public for help.

Individuals, corporations, and foundations who want to invest can should go to theyarrow.ca to learn how they can contribute.

CN Rail said it set a new weekly grain movement record earlier this month.

Grain shipments for the week of Oct. 16 reached 806,000 metric tonnes, exceeding the previous record by over 50,000 metric tonnes.

The record follows CN’s second-best September ever for grain movement from Western Canada, with over 2.64 million tonnes moved to market.

Chief marketing officer Doug MacDonald said CN will continue delivering results for Canadian farmers and all customers.
