Child porn bust results in 13 month jail sentence

Oct 24, 2022 | 11:07 AM

A Prince Albert man who evaded police for nearly two years on a charge related to possessing child pornography has received a jail sentence of 395 days.

Nicki Daniels, 34, entered guilty pleas last June and was recently sentenced in Edmonton on Oct. 17.

In addition to the guilty plea related to possessing child pornography, Daniels also pled guilty to two counts of failure to attend court, and failure to comply with a previous court order.

An additional charge of failing to attend court was withdrawn by the Crown at the sentencing hearing.

The case dates back to March 11, 2020, when the initial police investigation began and four months later, the ICE Unit implemented a search warrant at a residence in Prince Albert.

While there the police seized various electronic devices and confirmed they stored images and videos of child pornography. The investigation included the possession of child porn from an online storage system in the U.S.

Daniels was released from custody at the conclusion of his first court appearance, and on August 11, 2020, he failed to show up for court.

According to Alberta RCMP, Daniels was arrested last June in the Fort McMurray area for outstanding charges in that province related to breach of a court order.

After his release from custody, Daniels will be on probation for two years, and on the national sex offender registry for a period of 10 years.

With credit for time spent in remand, Daniels has 279 days left to serve.

When the case was briefly discussed in court Monday, it was done so more as a formality to inform the judge the case had been resolved.
