Raiders add speedy forward Anderson in swap with Rebels

As the WHL season progressed, it became evident the Prince Albert Raiders had a problem most teams would love to have: they had too many defencemen deserving of ice time.

The Raiders hope they’ve addressed that problem and added some scoring up front with a trade.

The team announced today it acquired forward Carter Anderson from the Red Deer Rebels in exchange for defenceman Tayem Gislason and a conditional fifth round pick. Anderson is a 2004-born forward from Thompson, Manitoba.

“Carter is a young player who’s got experience at centre,” Raiders GM Curtis Hunt said. “I know this year, he’s been playing on the wing. It was a similar situation in Red Deer where he was down the lineup because of the depth. I think with the return of (Ben) King from an NHL tryout, it put us in a situation where I think we have a really good hockey trade.”

Anderson played his first WHL games in 2021 as a member of the Rebels, netting two goals in 14 games. He then joined the team for a full season last year, posting seven goals and three assists in 65 games. This season, he’s begun to bust out offensively with three goals in his first five games.

“I like the way he plays,” Hunt said. “He plays hard every shift, he goes to tough areas, he’s a guy that has got tremendous speed and it doesn’t matter what your sport, speed is so important to success. We’re looking forward to that tenacity, and he seems to have found a little scoring touch early in the year.”

Gislason was a sixth round pick of the Raiders in the 2018 prospects draft. He made his Raiders debut in the hub games in 2021, with three assists in 23 games. Last season, he scored his first WHL goal against the Saskatoon Blades and suited up in 62 contests. He played all eight games this season.

Gislason was one of eight active defencemen on the Raiders roster before he was traded, and the team had to make tough choices every night, even when they dressed seven blue liners. Acquiring Anderson gives them a shot in the arm up front, and some breathing room with tough choices on the back end.

“It put us in a position, where in order to be fair to our D so there’s enough ice for guys to develop,” Hunt said. “It put us in a position where we had to do something there. After a while, it can get frustrating for players if there are too many of them.”

According to Hunt, Anderson will be available to the team for their games this week. Whether he plays wing or centre, he’ll add speed and depth to the group.

“If his start is any indication of what the season might look like that’s pretty exciting for us. But it’s really his work ethic and tenacity. We know he’s got that skilled game, sometimes it takes a little time for those players to find it at the WHL level, but we know it’s in there,” Hunt said.

The Raiders next action is on Wednesday night against the Regina Pats. Catch that game on 900 CKBI.
