Prince Albert woman sets sights on new book to support Safe Shelter

Oct 11, 2022 | 2:00 PM

A fundraiser for Prince Albert’s Safe Shelter for Women is in the process of collecting stories.

Lorna Boryski wants to create a book of women’s stories and aims to have between 30 and 40 contributors. She told paNOW the goal is two-fold, both to help raise needed funds for the shelter and also inspire women who may need peer support.

“Storytelling is one of the greatest healing sources that we have,” she said.

The timeline for the story collection is Oct. 22, so Boryski can have the book ready for Christmas. She explained the story topics are very open for the writer.

“Whether its overcoming something or just an inspiring story, there’s a lot of women who are very inspirational,” she said. “Some people just have entertaining stories that may be funny or just interesting.”

Story submissions are to be between 1,200 and 1,500 words and must include a bio, but the description of the author can be as simple as “farm woman from Northern Sask.” Anyone wishing to contribute can do so by emailing womenofwonder.pa@gmail.com. Updates on the book’s progress can be found on its social media page.

The Safe Shelter for Women provides temporary shelter, safety, nutrition, transportation, information, referrals and support to women and children who are experiencing physical, mental, sexual, emotional, and/or spiritual abuse.

The shelter can accommodate 26 residents and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. Funding comes from the Ministry of Justice, private donations and fund-raising initiatives.
